No Longer Missing in Action (for better or worse)

Category: RandomMetaCosm @ 8:37 pm

Hey all, sorry I have been missing in action for so long. The election was long, and drawn out… and I had to keep some sites up and running through it all. So, now I am back and starting to get into action… so now what?

That is a darn good question… and I am not really sure at this point. In WOW, I always had a firm vision of where I wanted us to go, what I wanted to accomplish, and what the point was…

I enjoy WAR, and I will continue to play it, but I can’t currently offer the sort of bold leadership that you guys deserve. I just lack any bold ideas for WAR at this point. That is the fundamental truth. I enjoy the game, and plan to continue playing, but I have no GOALS in WAR. None. I can’t decide if the guild should be big or little. I can’t decide what we should spend our time doing. I simply lack vision at this point.

I have looked around, and it seems that most guilds derive meaning and focus in some sort of vast e-peen measuring contest, which I have absolutely no stomach for…

Ordo Familia the guild, and this site isn’t going anywhere, we will be around as a point of contact for Ordo members, and for casual players (and hopefully alts) to play in. But at this point, I need to recommend the best and brightest leave for guilds like Malice that will probably give you a more rewarding, and at the very least, a focused / goal oriented experience.

I will continue to be around, I will continue to support the ventrilo server, but I simply can’t offer any sort of bold leadership – I lack the ideas! This is a reflection simply on me, and on none of our wonderful membership.

Witching Night Coming Soon. (From the WAR Herald)

Category: Warhammer OnlineNiiko @ 2:37 pm

One of the many things I do is working out a plan for our live events. Just recently we all had time to look up from our computer screens to realize that Halloween was right around the corner and we’d like to provide some fun stuff to celebrate the occasion! So, you know what would be cool? How about a sneak peak at what we’re prepping for the Halloween season - known as “Witching Night” in the Warhammer universe when the divisions between the living and the dead grow thin, and the power of Shyish, the Purple Wind of Magic, waxes. Evil cults, witches, and necromancers use this time to their advantage, easily raising the dead and calling upon them to spread wickedness across the land.

I love those moments in Public Quests when, on the final stage, the enormous boss monster stomps into the area and the final, epic conclusion begins to draw near. What will that boss do? Will he cast a nasty DOT? Perhaps he’ll throw us all back into the aggressive monsters waiting along the fringes? It’s a great adrenalin rush! Also equally, if not more so, are those moments in RvR when you’re attacking the keep doors while the enemy pours down boiling oil, siege weapons are firing on both sides, and any moment you’ll storm into the Keep where the final outcome will be decided! You know what would be cool? What if we combine the two? In the skirmish areas around the entire world during the Halloween holiday, there will be boss monsters lurking for players to kill. They’ll have cool loot on them, of course, so players from both sides will want to take them down. I’m sure Order and Destruction will play nicely with each other and share equally with each other for the spoils of the fight – yeah right! What else would you expect from a Warhammer holiday? Trick-or-treating? Nah! Beating people over the head? Oh yeah!

In addition to the awesome conflict happening out in the RvR areas, we’ve got some unique encounters cooked up for anyone wanting to do some PvE Monster slaying. I don’t want to spoil all of the amazing stuff we’ve got planned, but rest assured that it’ll be “cool,” rewarding, and very Warhammer.

Thanks for playing WAR, I’ll look for you out there on the battlefield!

State of the Game, for folks who don’t read the Herald

Category: RandomNiiko @ 5:55 pm

Folks,

After over three years of work and one of the smoothest launches in MMORPG history, WAR is moving quickly towards the end of its first month. This is a perfect time to take a look at where we were, where we are and where we are going. First, on behalf of everyone at Mythic, I would like to thank you for your interest in our game. While it is impossible for me to personally thank all 750K+ worldwide account holders, please know that we are grateful for your support to date and the support we hope you will show us in the future. It’s been a long road to get where we are today but it has been a worthwhile journey. While I might be tempted to say that the future’s so bright we have to wear shades, as you’ve seen from our podcasts, we’ll even wear those indoors.

So, as to where we are today, WAR is doing fabulously. We are one of, if not the, fastest selling MMORPG out of the blocks and we are also one of the most highly rated MMORPGs of all time. While the game is off to a great start, we still have a long way to go before we can declare WAR a major long-term success. That success will only come by being focused on making a great game even better. How we are going to accomplish this begins with our first major patch (1.1), the subject of this State of the Game message. While WAR is truly a glorious MMORPG, it is not perfect and over the last month our primary focus has been to correct bugs and tweak a few things here and there. We’ve stayed away from major feature or career changes until we’ve had plenty of time to gather and analyze the data from our players. Having done that, we can now move on to what we are going to do over the next couple of months, culminating with the release of patch 1.1 later this Fall.

Let’s start with what we know is some truly exciting news. I’m happy to announce that in December, the Black Guard and the Knight of the Blazing Sun will officially be part of WAR. We have very special plans around their appearance and in our next newsletter we will provide full details about that exciting and rather novel event. When they were cut from the game launch plans earlier this year, I said that the Black Guard and the Knight would be part of WAR only when they were great and deserved their place alongside all of WAR’s other compelling classes. I also said that we would not charge any additional fees for this new content or put it in a separate expansion pack; that’s not how we operate. We’ve kept to that plan and with the introduction of these two classes, Mythic shows that once again we are happy to keep giving players more value for their subscription dollars than any other MMORPG developer.
Creating an MMORPG, especially an RvR-focused MMORPG, which runs perfectly on all types of PCs, is one of the most challenging technical aspects of game development. While the performance of WAR is great on most higher spec machines, we know that we can improve its performance on lower spec machines. We’ve been working non-stop to improve that performance and we’ve got a number of things going into the game between now and 1.1 that we expect will help to address everything from crashes to desktops (CTDs) to stuttering. We have a number of other client changes that will improve things such as propagation and ghosting.

Thanks in part to WAR’s success; our mail system that worked well in Beta has been straining to keep up with the heavy demand placed on it. It’s functional and it works, but it can also be slow and cumbersome to use. In all fairness to the team, the system’s problems have been magnified by the demand of having so many servers and players using it at the same time. That’s not an excuse though and we are working hard on deploying a substantially improved mail system for this patch. We will continue to enhance WAR’s mail system until it is one of the best mail systems found in any MMORPG.

Moving on to some more good news for our RvR players; we have brought additional resources to bear on, and augment, our RvR gear and overall itemization. In 1.1 (and beyond) we will be doing a myriad of things for our RvR players, including improving gear drops, increasing drop rates, and implementing an RvR-influence system to compliment the current PvE-influence system. We will also be giving players more incentive to engage in open RvR by improving the rewards for both assaulting and defending in RvR. WAR is an RvR-centric game and we will continue to do whatever is necessary to encourage people to join in RvR and reward them when they do so.

Other changes for 1.1 include major additions to the chat system (item linking and more) as well as continued work on our targeting system, including adding Main Assist and Target of Target. In addition to the server balancing methods that have worked so well over the last week, we will also be offering the first server transfers to our players to continue to help even out the server populations. These transfers will be free of charge but they will be limited to moves off high-population servers to select mid-population servers or off of low-population servers to a selection of mid-population servers. Much like we are doing now, we will select certain mid-population servers and let people transfer there. Once they reach a certain population level, we’ll remove them from the list and give their spot to another server. We will publish the list ahead of time so players can plan their moves accordingly.

While that might seem like a lot for a month, we’re not done yet! We’ll also be adding more exciting content to the game, including fourteen entirely new quest chains, two new Lairs, and many more Tome of Knowledge unlocks! This is only the first of what will be our ongoing content updates to WAR and it is a great start.

So, that about wraps it up for this first annual State of the Game, so without further ado…

Okay, so I was joking, we’re still not done. Over the last month the team has been looking at all the careers and building up a list of issues/concerns to address. Almost every career is going to see some changes and love coming their way and there are very, very few changes that will be seen as reductions to a career’s abilities. The Combat and Careers team has spent the last month looking at the changes that they want to make with an eye towards making improvements and buffs, not removing or weakening abilities. I won’t go into details here but the vast majority of careers all have nothing but love coming their way. Of course, we will continue to monitor and track all the class data so expect, like every other MMORPG, changes to the careers to be an ongoing process.

Well, that just about wraps my first WAR State of the Game and I hope that it has given you some insight into what we are going to be doing over the next month or so. This is by no means a comprehensive list of everything we are working on and I won’t go anywhere near talking about general bug fixes. The items mentioned above are just some of the highlights of our first major patch and I hope you agree that there is a ton of good stuff coming down the pipeline.

As required by lawyers everywhere, here’s the usual disclaimer that this letter is a guide to what we hope to include in this upcoming patch and not a guarantee of any kind. We are working on many things right now and my letters, as always, are just the tip of the iceberg. Fellow WARriors, we have a lot more big surprises coming your way that I will address in my next State of the Game message and it’s going to be a doozie.

Once again, I thank you for your support, patronage and interest in WAR.

Leadership MIA… and “The Plan”

Category: RandomMetaCosm @ 5:00 pm

The game has only been out for three weeks so far, yet it already feels like SO much has taken place. Hi all, for those who don’t know me, I am MetaCosm, the leader of Ordo Familia.  Now, some of you might not know me, and that is understandable because I haven’t been able to get much play time lately.  The game came at a weird time for me.  The game came out and I was hit with a fun triple play, plus some:

  1. Death in the family, right after game release, took a little over a week to handle.
  2. Planned business trip (a couple days)
  3. Planned weekend vacation (a few more days)

Combine those three things eating up a bunch of time, with the fact that I work for an politically related company.  We only have a busy season like this every 4 years or so… I have been working 14 hour days most days.  Life would have been a lot easier if the game had come out on November 5th.

I love the game, and will be around in the long-term, just having a short-term setback right now, I hope you all understand.

Anyway, I have been trying to sneak what time I can setting up some websites, and trying to be useful.

So, there have been lots of questions happening online that my officers have been unable to answer — well, I want to grab all those questions and redirect them to the forum entry releated to this post.  If someone asks you a question online, point them to this frontpage / forum post, and tell them to ask it there, I will be monitoring and answering it.

Let me start with some of the questions people already have had…

When will we start doing regularly scheduled guild events? I am thinking, we will start with serious T3 / T4 events the week of the 20th.  So get your little toons up to T3 / T4 as fast as you can!  We will be scheduling stuff for Wednesday / Sunday initially.

Who are Results May Vary? They are our first ally, and Olivander often leads keep raids that we are involved in right now.  Consider a call from him like a call from me, show up and help!

What about players who are not active on forums and ventrilo? They will be removed, using both Ventrilo and our forums is a keystone to being in this guild.

How big is Ordo going to get? We are going to attempting to maintain about 100 players.  Not 100 toons, but 100 players… non-active players will be getting cleared out this week, so post on the forums and say hi.

Are we going to keep alts in guild? That has been our tradition, even if it hurts our “renown per member” numbers and other metrics, we like to be able to talk to each other.  Currently, it is nearly impossible to manage alts due to lack of a “notes” feature, so we might be temporarly removing alts from the guild.

Are we recruiting? As we start to stablize we will be pushing people out and bringing new people in.  The players we bring in now will have to already be in T3 or T4.  We will no longer be accepting T1 / T2 players.

… Please ask more questions in the thread so I can answer them, and direct other players to read the thread and respond to it, thanks!

Amusing Take on WoTLK

Category: Warhammer OnlineMetaCosm @ 5:44 pm

Amusing Take on WoTLK: http://syncaine.wordpress.com/2008/10/07/blizzards-new-focus-for-wow-just-as-soon-as-mythic-fi

Blizzard, being the inventive genius shop that they are, have some rather revolutionary ideas in the works. Hold on to your hats, this could change EVERYTHING! I’ve gone ahead and edited a recent Bliz post, as they must have been in a hurry and forgot some key details. The ‘missing’ text is in bold.

Actually, we have been discussing new battlegrounds quite a bit lately. (since WAR sold so well and it seems this wacky idea of PvP might actually work, despite our best efforts to force everyone to grind raids) Wrath of the Lich King will feature Strand of the Ancients (attack/defend) as well as Wintergrasp (non-instanced, world PvP) (Which is not a BG, but we wanted to mention it during our talk of BGs. We realize this means we are adding exactly one new BG, just like we did with TBC, but we have not had enough time to play the upper tiers of WAR yet to see what we will do for our BGs, give us time. Our version of RvR will also likely be a pointless token grind, but hey… open PvP…)
